We at least know that the M and the V in M-V-P stand for Mike and Vaskivuo as the Komets forward was named the Central Hockey League Playoff Most Valuable Player after Monday’s Game 5 win over the Wichita Thunder that gave the Komets their ninth franchise title in 60 seasons.
Mike Vaskivuo led all skaters in scoring during the post-season with 24 points (10-14=24) and was tops with four game winning goals.
His game winner in Game 6 of the Opening Rouond against his former team, the Rapid City Rush, may have been the biggest as it came early in overtime in Rapid City as the Rush vied to send the series back to Fort Wayne for a deciding game 7.
Then with his team down 3-2 in the conference finals to the Missouri Mavericks, the West Palm Beach native erupted for three points, including the game winning goal, in his team’s 4-1 win over the Mavs extending the series to a deciding Game 7.
Then in the Finals, Vaskivuo scored four goals with six assists and was a +6 in the five games against the Thunder. The 6-1, 185-pound forward had multiple-point games in all four Komets wins.
The forward was released by the Rush in early March and quickly swiped up by the Komets in one of the best moves by a franchise this season.
In the end, his acquisition was a major reason the Komets are the only team in the CHL to end the post-season with a win and another title.
