With both the National Hockey League (NHL) and American Hockey League (AHL) champions to be determined in the coming days, the CHL is proud to have several contributing roles in the organizations battling for their league’s crown.
In the NHL’s quest for Lord Stanley’s Cup, the Los Angeles Kings lead the New Jersey Devils three games to one with Game 5 slated for Saturday night in New Jersey.
In the AHL’s chase for the Calder Cup, the Norfolk Admirals lead the Toronto Marlies two games to none with Game’s 3 and 4 set for Thursday night and Saturday night respectively.
A pair of important none on-ice roles are being filled by for the Kings are CHL alumni Denver Wilson and Alex Contis.
Wilson is the Kings’s assistant equipment manager. He spent two seasons with the CHL’s Arizona Sundogs (2008-2010) before heading to the Houston Aeros of the AHL and then on to the NHL’s Kings.
Contis is a ticket sales executive for the Kings who have made tremendous strides towards their season ticket base during their playoff run that has seen them defeat the top seeded Vancouver Canucks, the second seeded St. Louis Blues and the third seeded Phoenix Coyotes.
Contis worked in the CHL league office in 2006 and 2007 as an operations intern and then also worked for the Arizona Sundogs as an intern in 2008.
Two wins away from his team claiming the Calder Cup, Norfolk’s Vice President and Governor Joe Gregory is a CHL alumni who was the General Manager of the Youngstown SteelHounds during their three-year run in the CHL. Gregory recently spoke as a guest at the CHL’s Spring Conference in Las Vegas.
The lone player fighting for one of the titles that is a CHL alumni is defenseman Andrew Martens who is on the Marlies playoff roster. Martens was the 2011 CHL Defenseman of the Year while with the Wichita Thunder and this season played 25 regular season games in the AHL (with Oklahoma City and Toronto) before being placed on the Marlies playoff roster.
