Mallards Acquire Defenseman Matheson from Allen

MOLINE, Ill. (October 28, 2012) – The Quad City Mallards have acquired defenseman Derek Matheson from the Allen Americans in exchange for future considerations, the Mallards announced today.

“Derek is big, strong, dependable defenseman and I was very happy to have the opportunity to add him to our hockey club,” said Mallards coach and general manager Terry Ruskowski.  “He’s a guy who’s solid in his own end and who can provide physical play for us as well.”

Matheson, 26, picked up one assist in three games with the Americans this season.  The 6’ 3”, 215-pound,  Durham, Ontario native spent last year- his rookie campaign- with the ECHL’s Idaho Steelheads, for whom he scored three times and totaled ten points in 62 games.  Matheson broke into the professional ranks by playing seven Central Hockey League games and notching one assist for the Texas Brahmas in the spring of 2011.

Matheson scored ten times and produced 34 points in 95 career collegiate games at the State University of New York.  He captained the Mustangs as a senior in 2010-11- a season in which he scored six times and recorded 13 points in 25 games-  after having served as an alternate captain during his junior year.
