Facing elimination Saturday night at the hands of the Colorado Eagles, the Memphis RiverKings responded with a 3-2 win at home in Game 5 of the Northern Conference Finals to force the series back to Colorado for a Game 6 Tuesday at the Budweiser Events Center. RiverKings Captain Derek Landmesser scored the game winner late in the second period, and also assisted on Phil Aucoins power play game tying goal earlier in the frame.
Game 5 Box Score: Colorado 2 @ Memphis 3
Colorado Leads Series 3-2
Things started poorly on home ice for Memphis, allowing Riley Nelson to give Colorado an early 1-0 lead just 11 seconds into the contest with a wrist shot that beat RiverKings starter Larry Sterling. Memphis responded with perhaps their best game of the series, outshooting the Eagles 35-20 and scoring all three of their goals in the second period. Phil Aucoin tipped in Landmesser's shot at 1:31 on the power play to tie the game at one. Just 18 seconds later Tyler McGregor gave the RiverKings a lead they wouldn't give up as he put home a Derek Campbell pass from behind the Eagles' net. Landmesser's game winner was an unassisted wrist shot from the high slot at 18:27.
Riley Nelson completed the scoring with his second goal of the night with 34 seconds remaining with Tim Boron pulled for an extra attacker. Sterling stopped 18 shots to improve his record to 7-7 in the playoffs, while Tim Boron made 32 saves and suffered his first loss of the series.
A Colorado win Tuesday on home ice would send the Eagles to their second Presidents Cup Finals in three seasons, while a Memphis victory would force a seventh and deciding game next Thursday.
