Mississippi Signs Goaltender Kevin Beech

Kevin Beech Signs with Mississippi

(Southaven, MS) -- The Mississippi RiverKings of the Central Hockey League are announcing the addition of goaltender Kevin Beech to its roster for the 2008-09 season. Beech becomes the eighth player signed by the Mississippi club and the first goaltender signed under new Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Kevin Kaminski.

2008-09 CHL Off-Season Transactions

The sixth-round draft choice (#165 overall) of the National Hockey League's Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2005 Entry Draft started his CHL career with the Laredo Bucks last season, where he compiled a 10-4-1 record in 19 games played with two shutouts and a 2.42 goals-against-average. His season start with Laredo was exceptional, with five victories in his first five appearances, including two shutouts.

The London, Ontario native was then traded to Youngstown in late January. Beech finished the season there with a 4-3-0 win-loss mark to go with a 2.14 goals-against-average.

"Beech pushed Andy Franck to be the number one guy, so we look forward to having him push to be the 'go to' guy," Kaminski said. "He's big, young, and has a lot of potential and I feel he's starting to mature and come into his own."

The 22-year old goaltender also started off well with Youngstown, winning his first two appearances as a SteelHound, including a 4-0 win at home in his first start for his new team against the RiverKings on February 10th. Beech later added another SteelHound shutout late in the season against Wichita for a total of four shutouts in goal in his first CHL season.

Kaminski likes his goaltender's physical makeup, his abilities, and his potential. "Beech made a statement (for Youngstown) in the playoffs last year beating Colorado in game four, and still played unbelievable for us even in losing game five 1-0."

Beech's professional hockey background also includes brief action with the Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League late in the 2006-07 season, where he went 0-3-0 in six games played.

Prior to the start of his professional career, Kevin played major junior hockey with Sudbury and Erie of the Ontario Hockey League. He appeared in three seasons with Sudbury and started the 2006-07 campaign with Erie before his call-up to the pro ranks.

Beech's busiest major junior season was the 2005-06 campaign for Sudbury, where he played in 63 games and compiled a 33-25-5 record. His goals-against-average that year was 2.94 and his save percentage was .906 for the Wolves. He also assisted on five goals from the crease for Sudbury that season.
