NO BULL, AMERICANS DEFEAT BRAHMAS 5-2 IN SEASON OPENER
Three Goal Outburst in First Period Propels Americans to Victory
The Allen Americans opened up the 2010-2011 season Friday night with an action-packed win over the Texas Brahmas. The Americans recorded a 5-2 victory at the Allen Event Center in front of 3,247 fans, with most of the action taking place very early in the game.
The first period began with a frenzy of four goals in the first ten minutes of play, the first three of which were scored by the Americans. Cashing in first for Allen was Alexandre Quesnel, who opened up the scoring 22 seconds in, burying a slick pass from Tobias Whelan over the glove of goaltender Kevin Beech. The goal was Quesnel’s first goal as a pro, after playing last season in the QMJHL.
The second goal of the night came from Dustin Donaghy, who deposited the puck five-hole on Beech after receiving the pass from Whelan.
Shortly after Donaghy’s goal, Judd Blackwater put in the third goal for the Americans after making a nice move around the defender and putting a backhand shot top shelf on the short side. The Brahmas then turned to goaltender Wayne Savage to come in and replace Beech.
Texas’ Tyler Allen scored the last goal of the period, tipping in a point shot by Jim Burichin to make it a 3-1 game.
The second period was scoreless until the last minute when Texas’ Greg Hogeboom threw a shot on net from the point that found its way in the net making it 3-2.
Liam Huculak buried a puck right in front of Savage to pull the Americans ahead by 2 with just over 90 seconds to play in the hockey game.
Erik Adams scored on an empty net, firing the puck the length of the ice to create a 5-2 score with a less than a minute left in the game.
“I can take away a lot of positives,” Head Coach Dwight Mullins said. “I’m real happy to come away with a solid win tonight. I thought we really came together very well for our first game of the season.”
During the first intermission, fans were introduced to Biscuit, the Allen’s new American Bulldog mascot. Biscuit was introduced with much fan fare after taking the ice following a police escort.
