LOVELAND, Colo. (April 1, 2011)– Brandon Marino scored at 4:10 of overtime as the Quad City Mallards rallied from a 3-0 third period deficit to stun the host Colorado Eagles 4-3 in game one of a best-of-five opening round Ray Miron Presidents’ Cup Playoff series Friday night.
Marino scored the game winner on a breakaway seconds after the Mallards completed successful kills of Eagles 5-on-3 and 5-on-4 power plays in sudden death.
Eric Giosa dramatically forced overtime by scoring the tying goal from the slot with just 7.8 seconds left in regulation after the Mallards had pulled goaltender David Brown for an extra attacker.
The Mallards trailed 3-0 with just under seven minutes left in the third period, but goals just 54 seconds apart from Obi Aduba and Zac Pearson would cut the gap to 3-2. Aduba got the Mallards on the scoreboard from close range at 13:03; at the 13:57 mark, Pearson’s tip-in narrowed the gap to a single goal.
The Eagles’ surge into what seemed to be a comfortable three-goal lead began when Matt Glasser buried Steve Haddon’s centering pass at 14:05 of the second period to break a scoreless deadlock.
With just 54 seconds left in the second , Riley Nelson converted a centering pass from Kevin Ulanski to stretch the Colorado lead to 2-0.
Adam Chorneyko scored the third Eagle goal with a wrister from the top of the right wing circle at 8:13 of the third, but the Mallards, who benefited from a fine 38-save effort from goaltender David Brown, rebounded to pull off a remarkable comeback.
The Mallards and Eagles will meet for game two- again in Loveland, Colorado- tomorrow night at 8:05 p.m., before the series shifts to the Quad Cities for game three next Tuesday evening, April 5 at 7:05 p.m.
