The American Hockey League’s Chicago Wolves made coach Scott Hillman’s goaltender decision a bit easier Monday when they recalled the Missouri Mavericks’ Charlie Effinger.
Effinger is on a two-way contract with the Mavericks and Wolves, and this marks the first call-up of the season for the goaltender.
“My heart belongs in Independence with the Mavericks,” Effinger said from O’Hare Airport in Chicago. “But this is exciting. I’ve struggled, the team has struggled and this is a big confidence boost.
“The Wolves had three games in four days and I’m going to be used as a backup, but who knows, I might get in a game. We’ll just wait and see.”
The Mavericks traded for Brian Mahoney-Wilson when backup goaltender Gerry Festa suffered an eye injury in practice and was unable to play.
