Not all CHL players and officials get the summer off. Many players will do various things to keep themselves sharp and in shape. For an official, it can be a bit more difficult but for CHL referee Brent Coulombe, this past summer offered an outstanding opportunity and a recognition shared by very few.
The Welland, Ontario native became a full-time CHL official prior to the start of the 2011-12 season but his career as a Lacrosse officials has been ongoing for years.
The 27-year-old was recognized as one of the officials for the 2012 Lacrosse World Championship in Turku, Finland (under 19). The event took place in July and culminated on July 21 with the United States defeating Canada for the Gold Medal, 10-8.
Coulombe has been working international lacrosse games for some time earning a spot in the 2010 World Championship Gold Medal Game in Manchester, England along with working in five Canadian national championships and one European event.
“It is aways honour to represent your country in any event but especially at the World Championships," said Coulombe. "I am honoured and grateful to have officiate two gold medal games. It is not only the lacrosse and games that make this a unforgettable experience but also the life long friendships that you make at these tournaments from all over the world. ”
In hockey, Coulombe worked with the United States Hockey League and the Southern Pro Hockey League before becoming a full-time official in the CHL last season. Once again, Coulombe has been appointed a CHL full-time official and is excited to start the season in mid-October.
