Getting started has not been a problem for the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees in their Opening Round series with the Wichita Thunder, it has been finishing the games as the Bees are down 2-0 as the series shifts to South Texas for Game’s 3 and 4 at the State Farm Arena on Wednesday and Thursday nights.
So far in both games, the Killer Bees have taken advantage of first period power play by scoring first period goals.
In Game 1, Brandon Campos found the back of the net but the Bees gave up three straight goals in the second period eventually losing 4-2.
In Game 2, it was Tomas Klempa who scored the goal with the man advantage but Wichita once again came back with a goal in the second and then Chris Greene’s game winning goal early in the third period in his team’s 2-1 win.
During the regular season, only the Turner Conference winning Fort Wayne Komets won a higher percentage of games they scored the first goal in capitalizing on 29 of 36 opportunities. The Bees went 25-4-3 in the 32 games they scored first making it 78% of the time they scored first, they won the game.
RGV head coach Terry Ruskowski knows that the quick starts will be important for his team to get back into the series but more importantly, holding on to the lead will be more important.
