Remaining perfect in the post-season, the Missouri Mavericks took a commanding 2-0 lead in their best-of-7 Turner Conference Finals series with the Fort Wayne Komets thanks to their 6-3 victory in Game 2 on Saturday night in Fort Wayne.
The Mavs are a perfect 6-0 in the playoffs so far, as is goaltender Charlie Effinger who once again was busy making 39 saves in the game. He is averaging 35.5 saves per game through the post-season to date.
Missouri now heads home for three straight games in need of two wins to advance to the Ray Miron Presidents’ Cup Finals for the first time in their brief three-year franchise history.
Just over five minutes into the game, John-Scott Dickson found the back of the net for his fourth goal of the playoffs. The forward netted the game winner in overtime of Game 1 and has scored in four straight games.
Missouri wasn’t done in the opening period with Andrew Courtney scoring his first of two goals on the night making the score 2-0 after 20 minutes.
At the 13:06 mark of the second period, Jamie Lovell cut the Mavs lead in half with his second post-season goal but it was answered quickly with Patrick Schafer pushing the advantage back to two goals at the 17:02 mark with his second goal of the post-season.
With the score 3-1, Courtney’s second goal of the night was maybe the biggest as less than a minute into the final period it gave the Mavericks a 4-1 lead.
Fort Wayne would come back, Bobby Chaumont’s power play goal and Chris Auger’s even strength goal scored just 1:05 apart would change the complexion of the game but the Komets would never pull even.
Brandon Smith showed his speed with just over two minutes left as the Komets were making their final push and essentially put the game on ice. A puck pushed down the right wing boards was chased down by Smith ahead of the Komets defense and he would glide in and snap a shot up into the net making the score 5-3.
Ed McGrane scored an empty-net goal doubling up the Komets on the final scoreboard.
Nick Boucher played just about 12 minutes but was pulled after allowing two goals on seven shots. Gerry Festa played the remainder of the game and took the loss with a 13 save effort.
The Komets outshot the Mavs 42-24 but couldn’t dent Effinger enough to even the series and now face a tough 2-0 deficit.
Courtney, Smith and McGrane all finished with two points for Missouri and Chaumont and Frankie DeAngelis each had two points on the night in the losing effort for the Komets who have now lost three straight home playoff games.
Game 3 is scheduled for Wednesday night at the Independence Events Center.
