Closing out a playoff series is always a difficult task and for the Missouri Mavericks they enter play tonight with two chances to dismiss the Fort Wayne Komets and advance to the Ray Miron Presidents’ Cup Finals for the first time in the team’s brief three-year history.
The Mavs will play in Fort Wayne tonight and again on Thursday, if Game 7 is necessary.
Missouri has qualified for the playoffs during each of their first three seasons and have won a playoff series in each as well.
In games that could advance them to the next round, Missouri is 2-1 beating Wichita last season in the Opening Round in a deciding Game 5 (the first time they had the series lead) and this season they topped the higher-seeded Evansville IceMen when they swept them away in the Opening Round.
In their history, the Mavs have lost two series falling in a sweep to the eventual Champs, Rapid City, during the 2010 post-season and then last year losing to the Colorado Eagles, three games to one.
Missouri is coming off a 5-2 win over the Komets in Game 5 on Saturday night, the first win by a home team in the series.
During the first two games in Fort Wayne, the Mavs earned a 3-2 overtime win in Game 1 and then a 6-3 triumph in Game 2.
Missouri’s power play has been somewhat inconsistent during the series netting scores in two of the five games and posting an overall 4 for 20 mark. In Game 4, they excelled at a 3 for 6 clip.
