The Wichita Thunder have advanced to the Ray Miron Presidents’ Cup Finals thanks to a 3-2 overtime win over the Texas Brahmas in Game 6 of the Berry Conference Finals on Monday night at the NYTEX Sports Centre in North Richland Hills, Texas.
Matt Robinson netted the game winner giving the Thunder their second straight overtime win in the series. Robinson’s unassisted goal came at the 4:44 mark of the extra session.
Texas outshot Wichita in the game but Adam Russo was outstanding in net stopping 32 of the 34 shots he faced. Russo improves to 8-3 in the post-season.
The Thunder’s special teams were outstanding in the game getting a power play score from Chris Chappell, his fourth goal of the playoffs, in the second period and a shorthanded goal from Chris Greene, his third goal of the playoffs and second shorthanded strike, at the 15:59 mark of the middle frame.
The shorthanded goal for the Thunder was their league-leading sixth of the post-season.
Each time the Brahmas fell behind, they responded as Adam Hogg scored in the second period tying the score at one goal apiece and Brendon Hodge scored early in the third period to tie the game at two eventually sending it to overtime.
Brad Fogal made 25 saves and was sharp in the series but took the loss for Texas.
The Thunder will now wait for the winner of the Fort Wayne/Missouri Turner Conference Finals.
