The Fort Wayne Komets left little doubt to the outcome of Game 5 of their best-of-7 series with the Wichita Thunder as they jumped all over the visitors with a five-goal first period en route to claiming the 2012 Ray Miron Presidents’ Cup.

The Komets won Game 5 by a 6-3 score winning their series against the Thunder four games to one.

The first period was an offensive explosion for the two teams who combined to score seven times in the opening 20 minutes.

In a reversal of Game 4, it was the Thunder who jumped on the scoreboard with a penalty shot.  This time it was Aaron Davis who took the shot for Wichita and he beat Nick Boucher giving the Thunder a 1-0 lead.  In Game 4, the Komets received a penalty shot early in the game and Mike Vaskivuo connected for the score.

Trailing 1-0, the Komets responded huge with four straight goals scored over a 3:26 period.  Colin Chaulk struck first tying the game at one with his sixth goal of the post-season scored at the 5;19 mark.

Kaleigh Schrock gave Fort Wayne the lead just 41 seconds later with his sixth goal of the playoffs and on the power play, Frankie DeAngelis’ fourth goal increased the margin to 3-1 at the 7:33 mark.

Bobby Chaumont closed out the outburst with his seventh goal of the post-season at the 8:45 mark making the score 4-1.

Wichita cut into the lead with Matt Robinson breaking out of his slump with his third goal of the post-season (scored 34 goals in the regular season).

But any momentum the Thunder may have gained with the Robinson goal, it was quickly whisked away when Vaskivuo netted his 10th goal of the playoffs, tying him with teammate Chris Auger for the most in the league.

The Komets outshot the Thunder 14-6 in the period and carried a 5-2 lead into the first intermission.

Fort Wayne added on to their lead in the second period when Chaumont scored his second of the night and fifth in the last seven games at the 6:38 mark making the count 6-2.

The Komets outshot the Thunder 8-6 in the period for a two period total lead of 22-12.

The third period cruised along with just one goal as Thomas Beauregard capped off a solid offensive Finals that saw him score four goals with two assists in the five games.  Beauregard’s third period goal in Game 5 came at the 9:07 mark.

At the end of the game, each team recorded 25 shots on goal with Nick Boucher finishing with 22 saves and Bryan Hogan ending the night with 19 saves.
