Mavs Thinel Looks for Title and a Climb Up in History

The Missouri Mavericks got so close to the promised land last season, they could taste it.  After a 39-21-6 regular season, the Mavs quickly disposed of the Evansville IceMen in the CHL Playoff’s Opening Round with a four game series sweep and then won the first two games of the Turner Conference Finals against Fort Wayne (both games on the road) before falling in seven games.

A big key to the Mavs success last season, forward Sebastien Thinel, has decided to return for his 10th CHL season and continue his quest for that elusive ‘Cup’.

Missouri has already announced solid signings such as forwards Colt King and Derek LeBlanc but the announcement of Thinel has to be music to the ears of Mavericks fans.

Last season, the St. Jerome, Quebec native led the team in scoring with 82 points (23-59=82) and was the catalyst in the team’s post-season run with 15 points (3-12=15) in 11 games.

Although he led the Mavs in scoring, the 82 point total was the lowest in seven years for the veteran playmaker who has won two CHL Joe Burton Scoring Championships with 97 points in 2008-09 (the same year he won the CHL’s Most Valuable Player award) and 110 points in 2010-11.

Thinel will enter his decade in the CHL as one of the most decorated offensive players in league history.

His 567 games played rank 15th on the league’s all-time games played list and with a full campaign this year, he could move up as high as 6th place (627 games).

Thinel is seventh on the league’s all-time points list with 729 points and is just one point shy of climbing to 6th place and just 71 points away from joining the 800-point club.

He also could make a climb in goals (currently 12th with 258) and assists (currently 6th with 471).

The six-time all-star has been close in years past, not only with Missouri last season, but with Odessa in the previous eight seasons.

All the points and highlight reel plays aside, Thinel has to be eyeing this season as maybe his best chance for a championship and at the age of 31, one might wonder how many more seasons the skilled star will play.
