The defending champion Laredo Bucks have held on to the top ranking in the CHL Coaches Poll, but have done so by the slimmest margin seen all season, edging out the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs by just two points. Two previous occasions have seen three point differences between the top two spots. The Bucks have wrapped up both the Southwest Division title and the top seed in the Southern Conference for the post-season, but saw their 11 game winning streak snapped Sunday by Corpus Christi, then dropped a 5-1 road decision to #2 Bossier-Shreveport Tuesday night. Laredo received seven of 17 possible first place votes, followed by six for the Mudbugs and four for #3 ranked Colorado, who clinched their fourth consecutive Northwest Division title Tuesday evening, bolstered by the return of 2004-2005 CHL Most Valuable Player Greg Pankewicz after missing the Eagles 46 previous games with an injury.
Only three clubs (Laredo at #1, the Memphis RiverKings at #4 and the Amarillo Gorillas at #10) remain unchanged since last weeks poll. Four teams moved up single spots this week, including Bossier-Shreveport (#3 to #2), the Youngstown SteelHounds (#6 to #5), the Corpus Christi Rayz (#7 to #6) and the New Mexico Scorpions (#9 to #8), with Colorado (#2 to #3), the Oklahoma City Blazers (#5 to #7) and the Arizona Sundogs (#8 to #9) slipping. No teams dropped out or joined the Top 10 this week, and the top seven ranked clubs this week have already secured CHL playoff berths.
Throughout the season the CHL will release the results of the Coaches Poll. Each first place selection earns 10 points, second place earns 9 points, etc. Coaches cannot vote for their own team, creating a potential perfect score of 160 points should one club receive all 16 possible first place votes.
