Cotton Kings Make Coaching Move

The Lubbock Cotton Kings have become the third CHL club to make a move with their head coach this season, relieving Chris Dashney Sunday evening shortly after the Cotton Kings 3-2 home win over the Arizona Sundogs. Earlier this season Don McKee (Odessa Jackalopes) and Bill McDonald (Austin Ice Bats) were also replaced. Oddly, all three individuals are recipients of the CHL Coach of the Year award, with Dashney named in the 2004-2005 season, McKee in 2001-2002 with the Jackalopes and McDonald in 1996-1997 while with the Fort Worth Fire.

The Cotton Kings have scheduled a press conference for Tuesday afternoon to address their coaching situation.

Team Press Release

LUBBOCK, TX: February 12, 2007 – Lubbock Cotton Kings Team President Dave Groulx announced late Sunday night that the organization has relieved Chris Dashney of his Head Coaching and Director of Hockey Operation duties effective immediately.

Dashney had just concluded coaching in his 168th game, a 3-2 win over the Arizona Sundogs, which marks as the most games coached in franchise history. The 34 year-old Navan, Ontario native leaves the Kings with a coaching record of 78 wins, 77 losses and 13 overtime losses. His 78 coaching wins ranks second in franchise history, just three behind former Kings coach Bill
McDonald.

This season, Dashney was in his third season as serving as the Kings bench boss. The Cotton Kings were off to their second best start in franchise history through their first ten games (7-3-0), but the Kings have not won consecutive games since that time (November, 16th). The Kings are 4-10-2 in the 2007 calendar season, but there is hope for this season, as they sit just six standing-points behind Rio Grande Valley, with two games in hand, for the final playoff spot with 20 games remaining. Lubbock’s current record is 17-23-4.

The Cotton Kings fifth coach in franchise history, Dashney made an impact in 04/05 as a first-year head coach. He inherited a last place Cotton Kings squad and converted them into Southwest Division champs with a 34-23-3 record. The turnaround placed Dashney in the 2005 CHL All-Star Game in Laredo (coaching the Southern Conference squad), and he was honored as the CHL “Coach of the Year” at the close of the season. Dashney is the only Lubbock Cotton Kings coach to receive the “Coach of the Year” accolade.

Dashney turned to coaching in 2002/03 as an Assistant Coach under Doug Sauter with the Oklahoma City Blazers after a six year playing career. He spent four seasons (92/93 – 95/96) as a student-athlete at St. Lawrence University before turning pro in 96/97 with the Tulsa Oilers. From Tulsa, Dashney made stops with the Wichita Thunder, Memphis RiverKings and the Blazers. His pro totals included 145 points (22g, 123a) in 394 games, and also appeared in 48 postseason games. Dashney served as an assistant coach for two seasons with the Blazers before arriving to the Hub City.

PRESS CONFERENCE NOTICE: The Lubbock Cotton Kings have scheduled a press conference for Tuesday at 3:30 PM inside the City Bank Main Bank location on City Bank Parkway near Slide and Brownfield Highway. The press conference is set for the Cotton Kings organization to address the team’s coaching future.
