In the 1994/995 season, the Indianapolis Ice, then members of the International Hockey League, started an annual promotion called "Pack the House Night", designed to give back to the youth of Central Indiana through grants to non-profit organizations with youth activities and a portion of the ticket revenue sold. In the most recent edition of "Pack the House Night", the Ice jammed 14,324 into Conseco Fieldhouse on February 2nd to establish a new Central Hockey League single game attendance record. The 14,324 attendance figure breaks the previous CHL record of 14,289 set last season by Indianapolis on February 3rd, 2001, and is the second highest single game attendance total in all of North American minor professional hockey this season. The same night, the American Hockey League's Philadelphia Phantoms welcomed 14,505 into the First Union Center.
Four charitable organizations were designated to benefit from "Pack the House Night 2002", including Nathan's Battle (raising funds to help find a cure for Batten's Disease, which affects the nervous system), Shepard Community (an inner city youth program providing sports and meal programs), Junior Ice Youth Hockey and
Cystic Fibrosis. Also as part of the special events, the Ice players wore special commemorative jerseys designed by the children of St. Vincent's Hospital. Following the game, the jerseys were auctioned off with the proceeds benefiting the hospital.
"It is extremely gratifying to see the Indianapolis Ice not only set a new CHL single game attendance record, but to make a determined and significant effort to assist their community," said CHL President Brad Treliving. "I applaud their efforts, and those of the 14,324 fans who supported the Ice and their community on this very special night."
The Ice return to their regular home venue (The Pepsi Coliseum) this weekend, and while they won't set a new attendance record, the team has special events planned for both Friday against the Wichita Thunder and Saturday against the Tulsa Oilers. Friday evening is Ladies' Night, with special events catering to the women of Indianapolis. Several giveaways will take place at the game, including a certificate for a haircut, color and makeup from a Kenra Global Salon. Saturday will feature a much different promotion, as legendary rock band Quiet Riot visits Pepsi Coliseum for a post-game concert. Their debut album, "Metal Health", was the first heavy metal album to reach # 1 on the Billboard charts and sold over 10 million copies. Quiet Riot also recently appeared on VH1's "Behind the Music" and was included on the station's list of the 100 Greatest Bands of Rock and Roll." Rest assured that the action will be fast and furious both on and off the ice Saturday in Indianapolis.
