(Team Release) - The Jackalopes announced today that defenseman Alex Dunn has been invited to training camp with the Houston Aeros of the American Hockey League (AHL). Houston is the top affiliate of the National Hockey League Minnesota Wild. "Dunner" was named to the CHL's All-Rookie Team last season and was also named the Jackalopes Defenseman of the Year.
"This is a great opportunity for 'Dunner' and it's very well deserved," said head coach Paul Gillis. "Getting experience at that level (the AHL) will be tremendous for Alex's development as a hockey player, and it really benefits the Jacks as well. Competing against AHL players will elevate his game and make us a better club in the process. He's an outstanding young player and has earned this chance (to go to an AHL camp). We expect Alex to have a big year for the Jackalopes, and this is a tremendous way to start."
Dunn signed with the Jackalopes following a four-year collegiate career at Lake Superior State University. The 25-year old from Waterford, Michigan also played briefly in the ECHL in 2005-06, skating in nine games for the Idaho Steelheads, coached by former Jacks assistant Derek Laxdal. It was, in part, on Laxy's recommendation that the Jacks recruited Dunn.
