The 14-game season opening road trip for the Youngstown SteelHounds has been nothing but miraculous no matter how they finish in their final three games of the swing. On Sunday, the Hounds earned two more points getting it done in comeback fashion with a three-goal third period en route to a 4-2 victory over the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees. With the victory, the Hounds are a CHL-best 10-0-1 on the season.
Hounds-Bees Box Score
Youngstown started the scoring just 42 seconds into the game with Chris Richards setting up Petr Pohl for his seventh goal of the season. The Killer Bees tied the score with Josh Bonar finding the back of the net for his third of the season making the score 1-1 after 20 minutes.
Rio Grande Valley would take the lead with a Rob Voltera power play goal in the second period and take a 2-1 lead into the second intermission but the “between periods” speech by Hounds Head Coach Kevin Kaminski lit a fire with Youngstown getting third period goals from Erik Johnson (shorthanded), Pohl and Nathan Schwartzbauer taking the victory and winning their third straight game.
Goaltender Brad Roberts was outstanding in Youngstown’s 7-2 victory on Friday in Austin and with the early start time got the nod again today and he did not disappoint making 27 saves for the victory. The Hounds outshot the Bees 41-29 including 16-6 in the third period. Jeff Van Nynatten made 37 saves in the loss. The Bees have lost three straight games and five of their last six contests.
The bus will hit three more stops (Tulsa, Mississippi and Texas) before the SteelHounds go home for their opener on Friday, November 23rd.
