Rage Heats Up Powerplay
- Mohr notches four points and Wray and Rycroft score two goals each in 6-3 win -
Broomfield, Colo. – The Rocky Mountain Rage defeated the New Mexico Scorpions 6-3 Friday night at the Broomfield Event Center in the conclusion of the teams’ season series. The Rage improved their 15th ranked powerplay percentage with a season-high five powerplay goals in the game, tying the franchise record. Defenseman Jarred Mohr also notched a season-high four-point game (1g, 3a). Scott Wray and Daymen Rycroft earned two goals each as the Rage racked up 46 shots on goal for the second highest total of the season.
The Rage is 5-1 this season against New Mexico. The Rage improved to a 17-14-3 (37 points) overall record and 2nd place in the Northwest Division. The Scorpions fell to 12-20-2 (26 points) for 3rd place in the Southwest Division.
New Mexico earned the first tally of the game with a shot from the left wing by Mitch Stephens at 7:13.
Rocky Mountain answered back twice. Defenseman Jarred Mohr scored with a long wrist shot at 14:16 on the powerplay. Four minutes later, defenseman Tyler Butler fired a slap shot from just inside the blueline and Scott Wray redirected it in net in mid-air at 18:18.
In the second period, Rocky Mountain’s Daymen Rycroft added back-to-back powerplay goals with first coming at 4:35 from Colt King and Mohr. He scored the second at 6:53 off of a spin pass in front of the crease by Brent Cullaton.
New Mexico closed scoring in the period with a goal by defenseman Aaron MacInnis at 9:41 to cut Rocky Mountain’s lead in half.
Wray added his second goal of the night just 1:06 into the third period by tipping a shot by Mohr past the right shoulder of Scorpions goaltender Jason Wolfe.
Despite Rocky Mountain’s offensive success, New Mexico continued to chase the Rage. Scorpion Torren Delforte scored on the stick side of Rage goaltender Marty Magers at 3:27.
Nathan O’Nabigon closed out scoring at 16:10 with the only even-strength goal of the night for the Rage.
