SUNDOGS ADD SIZE AND SCORING TO BLUE LINE
Evan Shaw and Andrew Derton Join Club
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. – The Arizona Sundogs of the Central Hockey League announced today the signings of defensemen Evan Shaw and Andrew Derton. Shaw and Derton were teammates last season while playing with the Geleen Smoke Eaters in Holland.
In 40 games with Geleen last season, Shaw recorded eight goals, 12 assists and 66 penalty minutes (PIM). The four-year-pro out of Narragansett, Rhode Island spent his first three pro seasons skating in the ECHL. In 185 regular season games with Columbia, San Diego and Trenton, Shaw tallied 20 points (4g/16a) and 193 PIM.
Prior to turning pro, the 6-foot-2, 210-pound Shaw gained experience at both the junior and college level, appearing in nine games with Michigan State University (NCAA) in 2002-03 before joining the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) later that year. In 159 regular season games with the Remparts, Shaw recorded 33 points (5g/28a) and 224 PIM. Shaw also skated for the U.S. National Team Developmental Program for two seasons from 2000-02.
Derton, 27, also appeared in 40 games with Geleen in 2008-09, his first season as a pro. The 6-foot, 200-pound blue liner averaged nearly a point per game, registering 10 goals while assisting on 23 more. Derton also added 212 PIM in his rookie campaign last season.
Prior to turning pro, the Powell River, British Columbia, native played four seasons at St. Norbert College (NCAA Div. III), helping the Green Knights to four-straight Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) regular season titles and two NCHA postseason titles in 2004 and 2005. In 113 games with St. Norbert, Derton tallied 28 goals, 75 assists and a school record 255 PIM. Derton earned numerous awards during his four-year stint with St. Norbert including ACHA All-American first-team honors and USCHO.com All-American first-team honors in 2006, USCHO.com All-American second-team honors in 2007 and NCHA All-League first-team honors in 2005 and 2006.
