Gorillas a Perfect 3-0 After Win Over Mississippi
Amarillo, TX 10/18/09 – Another game and another victory for the Amarillo Gorillas as they defeat last season’s Northeast division champions, the Mississippi RiverKings 5-2.
A hustling Gorillas squad earned the first goal of the game in the first period as Gorillas forward Jake Morissette fed a pass to forward Anthony Battaglia that created a two-on-one opportunity deep in Mississippi territory. Battaglia took advantage by not passing and scored his first CHL goal in his professional career. Gorillas lead 1-0 after one.
The lone action in the second period came from the Riverkings. As Gorillas goaltender Tuomas Lohtander was sprawled on the ice, the net was left empty up top, where Mississippi forward Ryan Campbell banged home his second goal in as many nights. At the end of two, Amarillo 1 Mississippi 1.
Old Gorillas faces showed off why they’ve thrived in Amarillo before in the final period of play. Forward David Nimmo scored the first of four Amarillo goals in the period, while last year’s leading goal scorer Joe Guenther collected two goals and two assists. Guenther earned the first star of the night.
Guenther has 7 points over his last 3 games…Tuomas Lohtander won for the first time in North America…Anthony Battaglia ends the weekend with 6 points over his last three games.
