CHL Alumni Helps Guide Blackhawks to Stanley Cup
What a season for former CHL Coach of the Year John Torchetti who this past week helped guide the Chicago Blackhawks to a six-game series win over the Philadelphia Flyers taking the Stanley Cup for the ‘Hawks.
His success in the CHL came with the San Antonio Iguanas who he guided to a 71-35-8 record in two seasons (1994-95 & 1995-96) and helped take the Iguanas to the CHL Finals in both seasons. Torchetti did earn some personal hardware in the CHL winning the 1995 CHL Coach of the Year Award.
The Boston native won the same honor with the International Hockey League’s Fort Wayne Komet in 1998 after leading them to a 47-29-6 mark.
Torchetti's NHL resumé includes time with Tampa Bay (1999-00 to 2000-01), Florida (2002-03 to 2003-04) and Los Angeles (2005-06). He was asked to serve as interim head coach at the conclusion of the 2003-04 while he was an assistant coach for the Florida Panthers, posting a record of 10-12-4-1 in 27 games behind the bench. He was also brought in with 12 games left in the 2005-06 to serve as interim head coach of the Los Angeles Kings posting a record of 5-7-0.
