Time in AHL for CHL Players
It was one of the strongest seasons in CHL history relating to players being called-up to the American Hockey League as 26 call-ups involving 22 different players occurred during the 2009-10 season. Several of those call-ups made big impacts with their AHL clubs and one CHL player moved all the way to the National Hockey League during the course of the season.
“We are very pleased with the development of our players and the strides we have made as a league,” said Jim Wiley, CHL Director of Hockey Operations. “Teams in the AHL know that there are good prospects in our league and that players are working extremely hard to move up to that next level.”
One of the biggest success stories was Tulsa forward Rob Hisey who was leading the CHL in goals at the time of his call-up in December but quickly made enough noise in the AHL with the Springfield Falcons that it was clear his days in Tulsa were over. Hisey, voted to start in the CHL All-Star Game, finished with 25 points (11-14=25) in 37 games with the Falcons, the top affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers during the 2009-10 season, and scored goals in each of his first three games with Springfield. His 25 points were tied for seventh on the team’s scoring list.
Laredo goaltender Jean-Philippe Levasseur started off on fire for the Bucks going 10-3-3 and capturing the league’s goaltender of the month award for November. His call-up to Springfield saw him finish with an 8-16-1 mark with a 3.59 goals against average. Although well below .500, Levasseur went 8-8-1 after an 0-8 start and had a stretch in January that saw him win five of six starts. He made it all the way to the NHL finishing the year with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.
The Allen Americans and Texas Brahmas shared the league’s top honor with five different players earning time on an AHL roster.
The Americans saw a pair of goaltenders get multiple call-ups as rookie Charlie Effinger was summoned by the Texas Stars on two occasions and rookie Chris Whitley has called-up by Texas and the Lake Erie Monsters. The Americans also saw forward Justin Bowers (Abbotsford), defenseman Brandon Straub (Houston) and forward Tyler Shelast (Texas) spend time in both the CHL and AHL.
Texas had goaltenders Joe Palmer (Rockford) and Brett Jaeger (Houston) spend time in an AHL uniform as did a trio of defenseman; Justin Kinnunen (San Antonio), Ross Rouleau (Houston) and Kevin McLeod (Springfield).
The defending Ray Miron Presidents’ Cup Champion Rapid City Rush had rookie goaltender Danny Battochio start the year in the AHL (Peoria) and saw forwards Colt King (Rockford) and Derek LeBlanc (Manitoba).
