At a press conference this evening at the Youngstown Club, overlooking the currently-under-construction Youngstown Convocation Center, the Central Hockey League introduced Mr. Herb Washington as owner of the CHL franchise that will begin play in fall of 2005. Washington, a highly successful businessman in the Youngstown area, has established an office and will begin operations immediately in preparation for the 2005-2006 season. Washington currently owns and operates 21 McDonalds franchises, and is a former recipient of the prestigious Gerry Newman Award (presented annually to an individual who demonstrates integrity, loyalty, fairness and compassion) from the restaurant chain. A former collegiate All-American athlete at Michigan State University, Washington held world sprint records at the distances of 50 and 60 yards. Drafted by the Baltimore Colts to play football, Washington elected to join Major League Baseballs Oakland Athletics, winning a world series title in the 1974 season. Washington is also a member of the Michigan State University Hall of Fame.
