The Colorado Eagles, with a 4-1 home ice win Wednesday evening over Amarillo, have claimed their first ever Central Hockey League regular season championship and the Governors Cup, renamed earlier this season to the Bud Poile Governors Cup to honor former CHL administrator and Hockey Hall of Fame member Bud Poile. The Eagles will receive the trophy at their final home regular season game on Wednesday, March 16th against Lubbock, from special guest David Poile, Buds son, and the General Manager of the NHL's Nashville Predators.
Rookie Kevin Marsh had a fabulous night in the clinching game, scoring his 22nd and 23rd goals of the season and adding two assists. With the regular season title goes home ice advantage throughout the playoffs, meaning the road to the Ray Miron Presidents Cup goes through Northern Colorado.
Also already clinching Northern Conference playoff berths are the Wichita Thunder and Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs. Wichita can finish no higher than the # 3 seed, while Bossier-Shreveport can wrap up the Northeast Division title with two points. The Thunder and Mudbugs will almost certainly meet in the opening round of the post-season, in a best-of-seven game series tentatively scheduled to start in Bossier-Shreveport on Thursday, March 24th. Colorado will await the eventual winner of the five-team (Tulsa, New Mexico, Oklahoma City, Fort worth and Memphis) fray battling for the fourth and last Northern Conference berth.
