Mallards Ink Sheldrake
MOLINE, Ill. (August 25, 2011) – The Quad City Mallards of the “AA” Central Hockey League today announced they have signed right wing/defenseman Tyler Sheldrake. Per team policy, no contract terms were announced.
Sheldrake, 22, last season recorded a goal and an assist while piling up 84 penalty minutes in 18 games with the Mississippi RiverKings. The 6’ 0”, 220-pound, Dunnville, Ontario, native joined the RiverKings after splitting the previous season between the junior and professional ranks. Sheldrake began the 2009-10 campaign with the Grande Prairie Storm of the Alberta Junior League before turning pro with the CHL’s Corpus Christi IceRayz. He picked up one assist and 103 penalty minutes in ten games with Grande Prairie and registered another assist along with 61 penalty minutes in 19 games with Corpus Christi.
“What I like about Tyler is that he can play both forward and defense and he brings a hard-nosed, gritty game to whatever position he plays,” said Mallards head coach and general manager David Bell. “He is an extremely driven player who wants to get better every time he gets on the ice. I think Mallards fans will like what he brings to the table.”
Sheldrake spent the bulk of his junior career in the Ontario Hockey League. After a brief stint with the OHL’s Peterborough Petes early in the 2007-08 season, Sheldrake was acquired by the Sudbury Wolves, for whom he would play the better part of two seasons. He topped 100 penalty minutes in each of his two OHL campaigns and totaled 16 points in 116 games during his time in the league.
Sheldrake joins Obi Aduba, Jared Brown, Brad Fogal, Eric Giosa, Joel Gasper, Jason Kostadine, Karl Linden, Brandon Marino, David McKee, Darren McMillan, Bobby Preece, John Snowden and Quinn Waller to bring the number of signings announced by the Mallards for the 2011-12 season to 14.
