Komets Double-Up Missouri in Turner Battle


MAVERICKS FALL TO KOMETS, 4-2

FORT WAYNE, Indiana – The Missouri Mavericks were defeated, 4-2, Thursday night by the Fort Wayne Komets.  After a 1-1 tie through two periods, the Komets (18-7-1) scored three third-period goals and extended their first-place lead in the Turner Conference.  Ryan Jardine scored both goals for the Mavericks and goaltender Gerry Festa stopped 37 of 40 shots in the loss.  Missouri (12-12-3) lost their second straight road game in regulation for the first time this season, and the Mavericks will travel to Bloomington for a game Friday night against the Blaze.

Jardine started the scoring for the Mavericks at the 15:09 mark of the first period when he split the defense and beat Komets’ goaltender Nick Boucher.  Jardine was assisted by Dale Mahovsky and Andrew Courtney.  The Mavericks lead lasted just over three minutes as Leo Thomas scored an unassisted shorthanded goal on a breakaway to tie the game at 1-1 at the 18:16 mark.  Through one period, the Komets held the lead in shots at 20-14.

The 1-1 tie remained until the opening minute of the third period when Colin Chaulk scored on a power play to give the Komets a 2-1 lead.  The lead remained one goal until Bobby Chaumont gave the home team a 3-1 lead at 14:36 of the third period.

Missouri fought back and made it a one-goal game on Jardine’s second goal of the night with 1:23 remaining in regulation.  The goal came with the extra attacker for the Mavericks and Sebastien Thinel earned the lone assist.  Missouri still had Festa pulled from the net in favor of the extra attacker when Chaulk made it a 4-2 final on an empty net goal. 

The win marked the first win for the Komets against the Mavericks in team history.  Missouri was 3-0-0 against Fort Wayne prior to tonight’s game.  The Mavericks finished 0-for-2 on the power play and the Komets finished 1-for-2 with the man advantage.  Fort Wayne had 41 shots compared to 30 for Missouri.
