Eagles Toughen Up

(Team Press Release) The Colorado Eagles of the Central Hockey League added three players to their 2006-07 roster Wednesday with the re-signing of Fraser Filipic and Les Borsheim and rookie Jay Birnie. Filipic, 26, has played three seasons professionally, all with Colorado. He returns to the team as the all-time penalty minute leader with 544 PIM's. The Thorsby, Alberta native has played 140 games with Colorado notching 66 points (27-39-66). Last season, Filipic broke out with the best season of his career, setting highs in all major statistical categories finishing with season-highs in games (63), goals (19), assists (25), points (44) and penalty minutes (276). The 5’10”, 185-pound forward was voted the “Best Fighter” in the CHL’s Best of the Best poll conducted at the end of last season.

Borsheim returns for his second season with the Eagles after leading the club with 338 penalty minutes during the 2005-06 season. The Watrous, Saskatchewan native is playing in his fifth professional season and fourth in the Central Hockey League. Borsheim played his rookie season with the Oklahoma City Blazers in 2002-03 and started his second season with the Blazers before playing out the rest of the 2003-04 season with the Philadelphia Phantoms in the American Hockey League. The 6’2”, 220-pound defenseman played with the Quad City Mallards in the United Hockey League in 2004-05 in his final season before coming to the Eagles. In 212 games as a pro, Borsheim has seven goals, 18 assists, 25 points and 926 penalty minutes.

Jay Birnie, the 6’3”, 225-pound forward from Victoria, British Columbia played in the BCHL with the Salmon Arm Silverbacks. In his one season in the BCHL he racked up over 400 penalty minutes and added 25 points helping his team reach the BCHL playoffs. In 2004-05 he skated at the South Alberta Institute of Technology. In 21 ACAC games he and tallied seven points, while reaching the 100 PIM mark while winning the championship.

“Hockey is a sport where intimidation can truly determine the fate of a game,” said Eagles Head Coach Chris Stewart. “We have addressed that area with these three players.”

The back-to-back Governors' Cup Champion Colorado Eagles will begin their fourth season of play in October 2006. Colorado has been the winningest team in the Central Hockey League over the past three seasons compiling a 130-40-18 record, and has set the "AA" record for consecutive sellouts at 94 regular-season games and counting.
