Shannon Back for 6th Season in Amarillo

(Team Press Release) The CHL’s Amarillo Gorillas announced Thursday they have re-signed veteran defensemen Ryan Shannon. Shannon, 28, returns for his 6th consecutive season of hockey in Amarillo.

“Ryan is going to be an incredible asset not only to our team but to me as the new coach of this team,” Gorillas Head Coach Jim Wiley said. “He’s been here all four years and he can really help me better understand this team. We’ve had a long talk about him becoming a more obvious leader this year and anything less than that would be an injustice to this team and to himself.”

Shannon is coming off his lowest point total since joining the Gorillas (2 goals, 6 assists) but did compile 152 penalty minutes last year (3rd on the team) while playing in all 70 of the Gorillas games, playoffs included. In fact, Shannon has been a mainstay on the Amarillo blue line since his arrival, missing only 5 games during his four-year stint with the Gorillas. In four seasons with the Apes, Shannon has compiled 7 goals and 34 assists while racking up 395 minutes in penalties.

“Ryan Shannon is going to be an extremely important element to our team this season,” Gorillas General Manager Darren McLean said. “He’s always been a leader for the Gorillas but now that veteran guys like Mark DeSantis and Derek Hahn aren’t around anymore, it opens up the door for Shannon to be one of the main leaders in our dressing room.”

The resigning of Ryan Shannon brings the Gorillas’ number of signed players up to 14. Shannon joins goaltender Jamie Vandespyker, defensemen Trevor Read, Trevor Socholotuk and Kevin Wilson and forwards Jason Chafe, Brent Hughes and Keith Rowe as returning players from the 2005-06 roster. The Gorillas have also signed defensemen Galloway Carroll along with forwards Joey Bastien, Ryan Costanzo and Chris Lipsett.
