The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs have taken a 3 games to 2 series lead over the Wichita Thunder following a dramatic 3-2 win in double overtime Sunday in Game 5 at the Kansas Coliseum. Former Thunder defenseman Ryan Fairbarn scored twice for the Mudbugs, including the game winner 6:29 into the second extra frame. Both clubs coughed up leads in the contest, with Tyler Hanchucks early second period tally for Wichita quickly matched by a Fairbarn power play goal. Bossier-Shreveport took their first lead of Game 5 midway through the third on a Cam Abbott score with the man advantage, only to see Steve Dix tie it for the Thunder with three a a half minutes to play.
Both goaltenders played exceptionally well, with Wichitas sebastien laplante taking the loss despite 46 saves, while Ken Carroll picks up his first win of the post-season with 37 stops, including a dozen in overtime.
Meeting for the fourth consecutive year in the CHL playoffs, Sundays contest was the seventh ever meeting requiring overtime and the fourth needing a second extra period. The Mudbugs improved to 5-2 against the Thunder in the seven overtime playoff games including 2-0 this year after also winning Game 2 in double overtime on March 31st.
Bossier-Shreveport heads home for Game 6 Tuesday with an opportunity to close out the series at the CenturtyTel Center, forcing Wichita into must win situations both Tuesday and Wednesday, also in Bossier-Shreveport, if necessary.
