Saints' Reid Gets Nod as CHL's Top Goaltender

The San Angelo Saints have today earned their second Central Hockey League award this season as netminder Scott Reid was named the recipient of the Scott Brower Memorial Trophy as the CHL’s Most Outstanding Goaltender. The award is presented annually “to the CHL’s most outstanding goaltender, in memory of Scott Brower, former CHL goaltender and Corpus Christi employee.” Reid receives the honor after being selected on 46 percent of ballots issued to CHL coaches, public relations directors and selected media members. Earlier this week, Saints Coach Ray Edwards was named CHL Coach of the Year for the 2003-2004 season.

San Angelo has had a markedly improved season this year, in large part due to the consistently exceptional play of 27-year old Reid. Entering the final weekend of CHL regular season action, the Grande Prairie, Alberta product leads the circuit in both saves (1461) and save percentage (.937). Sporting a record of 30-9-2, Reid has also posted five shutouts for the Southwest Division leading Saints and will receive his award this Friday as San Angelo hosts Fort Worth. “I am extremely proud of Scott”, said Coach Edwards. "He truly deserves the recognition and has been the MVP of our team all season long."

San Angelo and Reid, who is peaking as the regular season concludes with three shutouts in his last six games, will face the Amarillo Gorillas in one of two Southern Conference semi-final playoff series beginning Friday, March 19th. San Angelo currently holds a three point divisional lead over Amarillo to determine home ice advantage in the series.

Reid claimed three Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week selections this season in weeks 1, 15 and 20, and shared Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Month honors for February with Rio Grande Valley’s Jeff Levy. Finishing second in Scott Brower Memorial Trophy balloting with 24 percent of the vote was Ken Carroll of the Northeast Division champion Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs, who claimed the Western Professional Hockey League’s top goaltender and rookie of the year awards in the 2000/2001 season.

Later today the Central Hockey League will name the recipient of the 2003-2004 Rick Kozuback Award, presented for outstanding dedication, service and commitment to hockey. Friday, one of six finalists will be named the 2003/2004 CHL Most Valuable Player. Candidates for the CHL’s top honor include San Angelo’s Reid and Rio Grande Valley’s Levy, as well as forwards Jason Baird of the Indianapolis Ice, Jeff Bes of the Laredo Bucks, Greg Pankewicz of the Colorado Eagles and Chad Spurr of the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs.
