One-goal game goes to Rio
Hidalgo, TX 10/31/09 – The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees held on to beat the Amarillo Gorillas Saturday afternoon, winning 3-2.
The Bees would strike first in the opening period for the second time in as many nights. Forward Joel Irving one-timed a shot from the far circle past Gorillas goaltender Tuomas Lohtander to give Rio Grande Valley the early lead. Amarillo could not convert on three power-play opportunities and ended the period down 1-0.
Early in the second period, Rio Grande Valley struck again when last season’s Killer Bee leading scorer Jesse Bennefield netted his first goal of the season. Goaltender Tuomas Lohtander kept Amarillo in the game, stopping two separate breakaway opportunities. Through two periods, Rio Grande Valley 2 Amarillo 0.
The Gorillas would mount another comeback, as forward Stuart MacRae would alternate goals with Rio Grande Valley in the third. The pulled within one with less than three minutes to go, but could not covert with the empty net. The final score, Rio Grande Valley 3 Amarillo 2.
The Gorillas are currently on their first losing streak of the season at 2 games…both losses have come on the road…Stuart MacRae scored twice, giving him five goals through seven games this year and earned the third star of the game.
