Four-Goal First Pushes Arizona by IceRays

SUNDOGS END TWO-GAME SLIDE, HANDLE ICERAYS, 6-3

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. – Using a four-goal first, the Arizona Sundogs snapped a two-game winless streak with their second win on home ice, topping the visiting Corpus Christi IceRays by a 6-3 mark in the first of a two-game set Friday night at Tim’s Toyota Center.

Landry collected his third multiple-point outing of the season with one goal and two assists as Arizona chased both Kevin Desfosses and Kris Tebbs in the victory.

Held scoreless on the power play through 120-plus minutes of action coming into the contest the Sundogs finished 2-for-7 with the man advantage Friday.

With their club already leading 1-0 after an early marker by Torren Delforte, Landry, Kyle Hood and Linus Fagemo each tallied within 1:20 of each other midway through the first period Friday, stretching Arizona’s lead to four before Corpus Christi connected late in the frame to make it 4-1 after 20 minutes of play.

With the Sundogs skating 6-on-5 on a delayed penalty, Landry sent a low one-timer far post past the leg pad of Desfosses at the 12:20 mark on a drop pass from Scott Thauwald for his third of the season, chasing Desfosses for the time being.

Hood stretched the lead to three 21 seconds later, converting on the first shot Tebbs faced in relief of Desfosses.

Fagemo, added to the roster earlier in the day after a stint on the 14-day I.R., forced the IceRays’ second goalie change in less than two minutes, netting his first of the season from Landry at the 13:40 mark on just the second shot Tebbs saw.

Shorthanded four times in the opening period including a 55-second two-man advantage early on, the Sundogs allowed just one goal late as Justin Quenneville slammed home a Jereme Tendler centering feed from behind the cage with 1:15 remaining in the first. Perras made the initial save on Tendler, kicking the rebound below the goal line but the IceRays’ leading goal scorer calmed the loose puck and found Quenneville between the circles.

Rookie Joey Sides netted his first of two assists in the opening period on Delforte’s early marker 3:43 into the contest. Cutting across the top of the circles, Sides left a pass for Delforte who sent a wrist shot far post as Desfosses near post across the top of the crease.

Corpus Christi cut Arizona’s lead to one on goals by Tendler and Chad Costello in the first half of the second period but Konrad Reeder made it 5-3 with a power play marker, the team’s first in its last 23 chances, with four and a half minutes to play in the middle frame.

Jason Visser recorded the game’s final tally, his fifth of the season, 1:35 into the third period, redirecting a Mike Nesdill blast from the blue line through Desfosses seconds after a Sundogs power play expired.

Perras, improves to 4-2-1 on the year with 19 saves in the win while Kris Tebbs suffers the loss after allowing two goals on two shots. Desfosses turned aside 23 saves on 27 shots in 58-plus minutes of action. Arizona outshot Corpus Christi 29-22. The Sundogs finished 2-for-7 with the man advantage while the IceRays were limited to just one goal on nine man advantage opportunities.
