Mavs Extend Conference Lead with Comeback Win

TULSA, Okla. – The Missouri Mavericks won their second straight road game and seventh of their last eight games overall in a come-from-behind, 2-1, win over the Tulsa Oilers Tuesday night.  Nick Sirota and Toby Lafrance each scored third period goals to erase a 1-0 deficit and propel the Mavericks to their 17th win of the season.  The Mavericks now lead the Rapid City Rush by three points for first place in the Turner Conference.  Missouri will head home for a pair of games over New Year’s weekend when they host the Colorado Eagles Friday night and the Quad City Mallards on Saturday.

Box Score

“There couldn’t be a better time for our power play to break out of a slump and score a big goal for us,” said Mavericks’ Head Coach Scott Hillman.  “This was our third game in three nights and the Oilers were off for the past three nights, but we took it to them in the final two periods and the hard work paid off.”

After a scoreless first period in which the Mavericks outshot the Oilers 10-7, it was the Oilers to light the lamp first on a Chad Costello goal at 6:01 of the second period.  Costello was assisted by Jack Combs and Sean Erickson to give the Oilers a 1-0 lead after two periods.

Missouri outshot the Oilers in all three periods and put up 44 shots in total marking the most shots in a game since a 50-shot effort against the Oilers on November 20.

It was all Missouri in the third period as Nick Sirota scored a power play goal at 14:13 when his shot beat Oilers’ goaltender Ian Keserich low to the blocker side.  The power play goal was assisted by Ryan Jardine and Dominic D’Amour, and the assist for Jardine extended his scoring streak to a team-high six games.

Toby Lafrance continued his success against the Oilers when he redirected a shot by Cole Ruwe for the game-winning goal just 56 seconds after the Sirota goal.  Lafrance now has five goals and three assists in six games against the Oilers this season.

The Mavericks and goaltender Robby Nolan held on for the final five minutes to win their seventh game in their last eight outings.  Nolan stopped 17 of 18 shots for his 12th win of the season and he lowered his league-leading goals-against average to a lowly 1.96.

Missouri finished 1-for-4 on the power play and killed all three of the Oilers chances.  The Mavericks outshot Tulsa 19-4 in the third period and 44-19 overall.
