Bucks Start New Year with Win in Arizona


PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League beat the Arizona Sundogs 6-3 on New Year’s night Saturday at Tim’s Toyota Center. The Bucks picked up their first road win since December 4th as they improve to 11-14-5 (27 points).

Jeff Bes scored two power-play goals while Torrie Jung tied a career-high with 44 saves as the Bucks snapped a two-game winless streak. The six-goals tied a season high for the Bucks.
 
Laredo is 8-1-1 this season when they score four or more goals.
 
The Bucks jumped out in front of the Sundogs for the third straight game as they struck on the power-play 9:58 into the first period. Bes re-directed a shot in front of the net to pick up his 11th goal of the season.
 
Laredo was outshot 11-9 in the first period.
 
The second period was a wild one as the two teams combined for five goals, three by the Bucks and two by the Sundogs to give Laredo a 4-2 lead after two periods.
 
The Bucks would increase their lead to 2-0 just 2:15 into the second when Brian Matte scored his first professional goal after taking a drop pass from Jeff Hazelwood on a three-on-two break.
 
Arizona would cut the Bucks lead to 2-1 just 50 seconds later when Adam Smyth scored from the top of the left circle off of a turnover. The goal was Smyth’s fourth of the season.
 
The Bucks would go up 3-1 nearly two minutes later when Justin Styffe got loose behind the Sundogs defense and scored on a breakaway. The strike was Styffe’s fourth of the campaign.
 
The Sundogs would cut the Bucks lead to 3-2 a little over two minutes later when Cam Keith tipped in a shot on the power-play to net his seventh of the year.
 
Laredo would then increase their lead to 4-2 at the 8:05 mark when Hazelwood scored from the left circle on an odd man rush. The goal was Hazelwood’s sixth of the season.
 
The Bucks were outshot 20-14 in the second period.
 
Joel Irving brought the Sundogs to within one at 4-3 when he scored on a rebound with 7:45 left in the game. The goal was Irving’s first of the season.
 
Bes would put the Bucks up 5-3 with 2:35 left when he scored his second power-play goal of the night.
 
Darryl Smith would score an empty-net goal with just 25 seconds left to put the Bucks up 6-3. Smith passes Adam Rivet for fifth place all-time in franchise history with 78 goals.
 
Laredo was outshot 16-5 in the third period and were outshot in the game 47-28.
