Campbell Leads Bees Past Bucks in OT


LAREDO, Texas- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (15-21-3) defeated the Laredo Bucks (13-16-6) in overtime on Tuesday night as forward Tyler Lehrke netted the game winner at the 2:56 mark of the extra frame. The Bees victory snaps a four game skid.

Laredo scored the first goal of the game at 2:19 of the first period as Ryan Bennett took a pass from Brian Matte and slid the puck past Killer Bees netminder Mike Brown who was making his first start for the Bees.

Brown came up big later in the first turning away a Laredo two-on-none chanCe with a left pad save. In the first period Brown made eight saves on the nine shots he faced.

The Killer Bees tied the game with Tomas Klempa’s team leading 16th goal of the season while the Bees were on their first power-play of the game. After a Aaron Lewicki shot on net was turned away by Laredo goalie Torrie Jung Tomas Klempa picked up the rebound and ripped the shot past Jung. For the Bees the goal was a long time coming with the Laredo Bucks holding the Bees scoreless for over 130 minutes.

The Bees took the lead in the second period as Darcy Campbell scored the Killer Bees second shorthanded goal of the season. Campbell came in two-on-one with Nick Sucharksi and after Jung bit on the shot Lewicki hit Campbell who wristed the shot to the back of the net. Aaron Lewicki picked up the secondary assist creating the odd man rush.

Laredo tied the game at two goals apiece with the only goal of the third period. While on the two-man advantage, Ryan Lehr one-timed a shot past Brown after a nice feed from Jarred Mohr. Darryl Smith added the secondary assist.

The final horn would sound with the teams still tied at two and the Bees and Bucks would play their fourth overtime of the season, third at the Laredo Energy Arena.

The Killer Bees would score in overtime as Tyler Lehrke scored his fourth goal of the season at 2:56 of the extra frame. Darcy Campbell and Brett Wilson added the helpers. For the Bees it marked their third overtime victory at the LEA.

Mike Brown earned the win in his first start as a Killer Bee making 31 saves on 33 shots. Tonight’s game marks the first win for another Bees goaltender other than Juliano Pagliero.
