Colorado's Weiman Named Top Goaltender, Rookie

Colorado Eagles goaltender Tyler Weiman has today been honored with two year-end awards by the Central Hockey League. Weiman is the 2004-2005 recipient of both the Scott Brower Memorial Trophy (Most Outstanding Goaltender) and Rookie of the Year awards. Selected through voting among all CHL Head Coaches, Public Relations / Broadcasting staff and selected media members in each market, the 20-year old Weiman handily claimed both honors, named top goaltender on 34 of 51 (66.6%) ballots and top rookie on 29 of 51 (56.8) ballots. Defending honoree Scott Reid of San Angelo placed second in Most Outstanding Goaltender voting, while rookie scoring leader (69 points) Phil Aucoin from the Memphis RiverKings was the runner-up for top rookie honors.

Weiman, a 5th Round selection of the Colorado Avalanche in the 2002 National Hockey League Entry Draft, has been consistently superb this season for the Bud Poile Governors’ Cup (regular season) champions. Named the Sher-Wood Goaltender of the Month in both December and January, Weiman leads all CHL netminders with a 1.77 goals against average and a .939 save percentage, both marks which would establish new CHL single season records. Weiman’s 32 wins also lead the circuit, as does his eight shutouts, which has already tied the CHL single season mark.

Named “Best Goaltender” in the 2004-2005 CHL “Best of the Best” poll, the Lloydminster, Alberta native joined the Eagles following a four-year junior career with the Tri-City Americans of the Western Hockey League. Weiman becomes the third player in CHL/WPHL history to be named both Rookie of the Year and Most Outstanding Goaltender in the same season, joining Bossier-Shreveport’s Ken Carroll (2000-2001, Bossier-Shreveport) and Waco’s Kory Cooper (1998-1999).

Weiman will receive both awards at Colorado’s final home regular season contest on Wednesday, March 16th, when the Eagles will also be presented with the Bud Poile Governors’ Cup trophy by Bud’s son David, General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Nashville Predators.

Additional announcements scheduled for later this week include the All-CHL Team and Most Valuable Player awards on Wednesday, the CHL Man of the Year and Rick Kozuback Awards on Thursday, and the Most Outstanding Defenseman and Coach of the Year on Friday. The Joe Burton Award, presented to the regular season scoring champion, will be determined at the completion of the regular season on Sunday, March 20th.
