The Fort Wayne Komets improved their playoff position on Saturday night in their home finale in front of a sold out crowd of 10,480 fans as they held on in a defensive battle to beat the Colorado Eagles 2-1.
Tab Lardner scored both goals for the Komets in the first period with the second, the eventual game winner, coming shorthanded. The veteran’s strikes marked the 27th and 28th goals of the season.
The loss ended Colorado’s five-game win streak and may prove to be damaging to the Eagles who needed a point to clinch the Turner Conference and the number one seed in their conference. The loss means that the Eagles will need Arizona to beat the Rapid City Rush or at worst lose in a shootout giving the Eagles the title.
Colorado’s lone score came early in the second period with Steve Haddon finding the back of the net.
Nick Boucher was stellar in net including thwarting three Colorado power plays in the final period. Boucher finished with 26 saves improving to 18-15-6 on the season.
Kyle Jones made 31 saves but took the loss ending his five-game win streak and 10-game point streak (9-0-1).
