So Far for Allen: After winning the Bud Poile Governors’ Cup as the CHL’s point champions, the Americans cruised through the Opening Round sweeping the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees while never trailing in the series. They followed that up by becoming the third team in CHL history to erase a 2-0 deficit in a best-of-5 series to win the overall series when they came back to beat the Odessa Jackalopes in their conference semi finals series. The Americans dropped the first two games at home against the Jacks but showed their true colors in the next three games eventually advancing to the conference finals.
So Far for Bossier-Shreveport: Like the Americans, the Mudbugs had to come from behind to win their conference semi finals series winning Game’s 4 and 5 against the Tulsa Oilers to advance to the conference finals for the second straight season. The Mudbugs won their Opening Round series three games to one over the Arizona Sundogs.
A Closer Look: Despite Allen dominating the wins and losses in the season series, the Americans and the Mudbugs had some epic battles and have built quite a rivalry. Separated by just 200 miles, the two teams used special teams to propel most of their offense against each other each scoring 11 PP goals and converting at close to 25%. Allen outscored Bossier-Shreveport 14-8 in the third period of the head-to-head games showing their ability to close games out.
X-Factor for the Americans:
Chris Whitley. The Americans goalie carried a 4-1-1 mark against the Mudbugs during the regular season and in two seasons as a professional is 16-12 in the post-season and 55-18-6 in the regular season. Whitley was outstanding in the three wins for Allen over Odessa allowing just five goals.
X-Factor for the Mudbugs:
Jeff Kyrzakos. The forward has been the catalyst on the power play for the Mudbugs who have connected 10 times in 40 chances during the post-season with Kyrzakos netting three PP scores. Overall in the playoffs, the Toronto native has five goals and four assists netting a point a game.
