The pressure was on the Allen Americans on Sunday as they did not want to fall behind by two games in their best-of-7 conference finals series with the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs and they came through with a 5-3 victory fueled by special teams and three power play goals.
The series is now tied at one win apiece with Game 3 scheduled for Wednesday night at the Allen Event Center.
Chris Whitley earned his keep in this game stopping 27 shots including a point blank blast in the final minute off the stick of Michael Couch that sealed the deal. Whitley improves to 7-3 in the post-season and was especially sharp in this contest in the final period where he turned away 12 of 13 shots.
The Mudbugs grabbed the lead midway through the first period with a score from Clay Plume but a late strike by Nino Musitelli tied the game after one period. Musitelli’s score came with just 15 seconds remaining in the frame.
In the second period, the ‘Bugs regained the lead with a score from Jeff Kyrzakos at the 8:10 mark and appeared to be cruising before a parade to the penalty box and a trio of Allen power play goals changed momentum and the scoreboard.
Colton Yellow Horn, Dave Bonk and Bruce Graham all scored goals with the man advantage and did so just 2:21 apart in the middle frame making the score 4-2 after two periods. Jonathon Zion assisted on all three goals.
In the final frame, the Mudbugs would dominate outshooting the Americans 13-4 but Whitley was spectacular allowing just a PP goal from Kyrzakos at the 17:58 mark.
The Mudbugs had three power plays in the final period but could not take advantage to even the score. In the game, Bossier-Shreveport went 1 for 6.
Allen finished the game with three PP goals on four chances.
John DeCaro was pulled from the game after allowing the third man advantage goal making way for Ryan Munce who saw just five shots but stopped them all. DeCaro stopped 11 of 15 shots.
