The Evansville IceMen have added some muscle and a veteran leader to their roster today by signing forward Mike Sgroi for the 2011-12 season.
It will be the 12th professional season for the Toronto, Native who has played in more than 500 pro games accumulating more than 1800 penalty minutes during his career.
The 6-5, 230-pound left wing played with both Colorado and Texas last season combining to score a goal with four assists and 114 penalty minutes.
“Mike will certainly add a strong physical presence in our lineup for the upcoming season,” said Rich Kromm, Evansville Head Coach. “He is especially strong in the corners, goes to the net hard and always plays hard. There should be more room on the ice when he is on the ice. Also, we can’t lose sight of the fact that he brings a real wealth of experience to our club and that he has the ability to be a versatile player for our team.”
Nearly 200 of the bruiser’s pro games have come in the American Hockey League including two games last season with Bridgeport (the top affiliate of the NY Islanders).
