A succession of pro sports teams have come and gone in Rapid City, and now the city's latest franchise, the Rapid City Rush, has made a strong case that minor league hockey works in the Black Hills.
Starting their fourth year, the Rush have become a leader on and off the ice in the Central Hockey League.
Since the team's inaugural season in 2008-2009, 530,427 cowbell-clanging fans have clicked through the turnstiles for regular season and playoff hockey at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Ice Arena.
They watched the Rush go from falling short of the league playoffs their first year to become Ray Miron Presidents' Cup champions and CHL franchise of the year in 2009-2010, the fourth CHL franchise to hoist the Cup in their second season of existence.
There are keys to that success, according to Rush general manager Tim Hill, CHL executive of the year in 2011.
