One look at the 2011-12 Tulsa Oilers roster might lead a person to believe the team is too young and inexperienced to contend for a championship. The Oilers lead all Central Hockey League teams in total number of rookies with nine on a 20-man squad.
But a closer look at the stats reveals the Oilers are holding their own against more experienced teams. At 11-8-2, they are in the thick of a four-team race in the Berry Conference.
"They have done extremely well," Oilers coach Bruce Ramsay said of his crop of first-year recruits. "Even those that don't have the stats have played good.
"When you bring a rookie in, you don't know what you are going to get because you don't have a past history of pro hockey. You really hope they are going to turn out to be great players, and sometimes they don't."
