What a New Year’s Eve for Rapid City goaltender Danny Battochio who not only helped his team to a convincing 6-2 win over the Tulsa Oilers by stopping 22 of 24 shots but it was what happened with just over three minutes remaining in the game when the Lively, Ontario native did something that only three others have done in the CHL’s past 20 years – score a goal!

It marked just the fourth time in the 20-year history of the CHL that a goaltender had scored a goal with the last time coming back in 2007 when Arizona's Mike Wall scored. The other two were Austin's Bryan McMullen (2002) and Fort Worth's Phil Groeneveld (1995).
The Oilers had a power play and were putting on some pressure but after the 2010 CHL Rookie of the Year made a key save the puck was banged down the ice by a Tulsa player and subsequently found the back of the net. The rule gives the goal to the last person to touch the puck from the scoring team, that was Battochio.
Rush Head Coach Joe Ferras told the Rapid City Journal:
“I’ve seen those (goaltender goals) on TV, but I’ve never been a part of something like that.”
“It was just a fluke. It would be something else if you shot it down and tried for it, but you take them either way, you don’t ask how it went in,” Battochio said.
“He deserved it,” Rush captain Scott Wray said. “He battled real hard this weekend. He made those second and third-effort saves we’re used to Battsy making.”
