Three Things You Have to Know for Tonight – Friday, Feb. 24
1.) Finals Preview?
What a showdown tonight in Evansville when the IceMen (33-13-4) put their seven-game win streak on the line against the Berry Conference leading Wichita Thunder (34-14-2). The battle of the conference leaders will mark the third meeting of the season between the two powers with each team owning a win on the other’s home ice. The two clubs are tied for the league lead with 70 points but both have close pursuers with Fort Wayne trailing Evansville by three points and Allen trailing Wichita by three points. Wichita and Evansville will meet three more times before the end of the regular season.
Note: Brian Bicek and Todd Robinson are both on 11-game point streaks
2.) A lot on the Line
The Texas Brahmas (27-17-8) begin a three-game weekend series against the Tulsa Oilers (23-20-6) in a series that could have big playoff implications for both teams. The Brahmas have won seven games in a row and have created some distance between themselves and the fourth place Oilers (10 points). Tulsa is more concerned with the Killer Bees behind them sitting just three points away from that final playoff spot. A tough weekend against the red-hot Brahmas could be traumatic for Tulsa as RGV has a good opportunity with a pair of home games against the seventh place team in the Turner, Bloomington. Texas will play in Tulsa on Friday and then the scene shifts to the NYTEX Sports Centre on Saturday and Sunday.
Note: Mark Guggenberger is 7-0-1 allowing just 10 goals over that stretch with three shutouts
3.) Hot Times in the City
This weekend, Quad City (28-21-1) and Rapid City (27-17-5) battle in a pair of games at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center with the fourth and final Turner Conference playoff slot up for grabs. The Rush currently lead the Mallards by two points in the conference battle with one game in hand. Rapid City is just 1-2-1 in their last four home games, while the Mallards have lost three straight road games meaning something has got to give. Two of the best offensive duos in the league will go head-to-head with Brandon Marion (2nd in the league in scoring) and Eric Giosa (3rd in the league in scoring) taking on Shawn Limpright (4th in the league in scoring) and Konrad Reeder (tied for 6th in the league in scoring). Marion and Giosa have combined for 130 points and Limpright and Reeder have combined for 119 points.
Note: The Mallards have won three straight games versus Rapid City, all by a 3-2 score
