Third Period Comeback Falls Short in 5-4 Shootout Loss
FT. WAYNE, IN – Third period goals by JP Chabot and Nathan O’Nabigon forced overtime for the Arizona Sundogs, but Frankie DeAngelis’ first-round shootout goal was enough to propel the Fort Wayne Komets to a 5-4 win on Friday night at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in front of 7, 493.
Gerry Festa stopped all five Sundogs (16-28-8) shooters in the shootout to seal the win. DeAngelis finished with a hat trick for the Komets (33-16-3). Chabot scored a pair of goals for Arizona in the loss.
Chabot’s third period goal game at 5:36 on a rebound from Steven Kaunisto’s point shot. O’Nabigon deflected an Adam Smyth centering feed from the right circle with 3:36 left to play for his fourth of the season to tie the game at 4-4. Chabot’s tally came just after Sundogs goaltender Scott Reid denied a 3-on-1 rush by Fort Wayne with a sliding save at the right post.
The Komets took a 2-1 lead in the first period as Artem Podshendyalov and DeAngelis scored early goals for Fort Wayne and Olivier Proulx responded for Arizona on a rebound with 0.8 seconds remaining.
In period two, the Komets made it 3-1 on DeAngelis’s second goal of the game. Arizona closed the gap again as Chabot buried a rebound at the front of the net with 8:58 to play. Craig Macdonald and Proulx added the assists. The Komets extended their lead again as Stephon Thorne banked a centering pass in off a skate in the crease.
Reid took the loss despite a 42-save performance. Gerry Festa earned the win, stopping 31.
The Komets finished 1-for-4 on the power play. The Sundogs went 0-for-2.
The Arizona Sundogs conclude their 11-game road trip Saturday when they pay a visit to the Dayton Gems. Puck drop is slated for 5:05 PM MST. The action can be heard on Cattle Country 94.3 FM.
