The hottest team in the CHL could be the Rapid City Rush who are peaking at just the right time winning each of the last three games and five of their last six games and with a regulation win tonight against the Turner Conference leading Evansville IceMen, could pull to within two points of the front runners.
Last season, the Rush finished with a flurry going 7-1-0 in their last eight games to win the Turner Conference regular season crown and the number one seed in the conference playoffs.
During their 2009-10 championship season, the Rush finished the season with a 9-3-2 mark on their way to winning the title.
Rapid City has made some additions that could pay big dividends as defenseman Dave Grimson came out of retirement to rejoin the team he was a part of for the previous two seasons. So far in five games, Grimson has three helpers.
Jesse Schultz is not a new player but his return to the line-up after missing more than a month with injury is just like adding an all-star to the line-up. Schultz has played eight games since his return scoring two goals with five assists. On the season, he has 59 points (22-37=59) in 44 games.
Back in early February, goalie Danny Battochio was injured and has not played since turning over the workload to Tim Boron who has dazzled going 11-4-1.
With the absence of Schultz, veterans Konrad Reeder and Shawn Limpright picked up the slack ascending to the top five in the league in scoring. Reeder is third with 77 points (36-41=77) and Limpright is fourth with 75 points (24-51=75). The duo is a combined +39 on the season and have combined for 10 power play goals.
The Rush have championship pedigree with five players remaining from the 2009-10 championship squad (Scott Wray, Les Reaney, Riley Weselowski, Battochio and Grimson) and three players on the team were a part of the 2011 Champion Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs (Jeff Kyrzakos, Michael Couch and Limpright).
Getting healthy and firing on all cylinders seems to be the perfect recipe for the Rush as they continue their quest towards the post-season and towards a second championship in three seasons.
