Charlie Effinger played as well as any goaltender in the league during the second half of the season and in Game 1 of the Missouri Mavericks Opening Round series against the Evansville IceMen he picked up where he left off making 35 saves and helping his team to a 3-2 victory taking a 1-0 series lead.
The IceMen, the higher seed in the series but still having to play Game 1 on the road due to building issues with both clubs, pushed the offense outshooting the Mavs 37-32 but they could never get on top as they never held the lead at the independence Events Center.
Pier Pelletier was good in net for the IceMen stopping 29 shots but he takes the tough luck loss.
Missouri went 4-1-1 during the regular season against the IceMen winning four straight (that streak now runs to five consecutive wins against Evansville).
Playoff veteran Ed McGrane (playing in his 61st CHL playoff game) was a key part of the Mavs offense as he got the team on the board at the 8:30 mark of the opening period with the first goal of the post-season. Ryan Jardine and Tristin Llewellyn earned the assists on the even strength goal.
Evansville would tie the score about three minutes later with Matt Pierce finding the back of the net off a helper for Nicklas Lindberg.
Defenseman Dave Pszenyczny would get the lead back for the Mavs scoring his first of the playoffs at the 16:11 mark of the opening period with McGrane and Jardine drawing the assists giving each of the veterans two point opening frames.
Missouri added to their lead in the second period with Brandon Smith striking for a goal making the score 3-1. The lone assist went to Sebastien Thinel (playing in his 58th CHL playoff game) but Evansville appeared to grab momentum after 40 minutes when Todd Robinson made it a one-goal game with less than 20 second remaining in the period.
Evansville, trailing by one, would fire away at Effinger and the Mavs in the third period rattling off 16 shots on goal but they could not get through the orange wall as Missouri secured the Game 1 win.
Both teams received four power play chances but neither was able to score.
Game 2 is set for Friday night at the Ford Center in Evansville.
